I’ve called Los Angeles home for over 40 years, but there will always be a place in my heart for where I grew up in the small island town of Guayama, Puerto Rico. That is where I learned the true meaning of family, friends, love, gratitude and most importantly, to follow your dreams and never lose hope. My abuelita (grandma) and my mom shared many family traditions, including preparing desserts like Puerto Rican flan and café con leche (coffee with milk), praying, dancing, sitting in the rocking chair looking out at nature, chatting with family, friends and neighbors, All these years later, I hold close to my heart what my abuelita and my mother taught me, the childhood memories with my brother and cousin, aunts and uncles, and friends. The influence of my Puerto Rican culture and family traditions lives on within me in my everyday life.
It's a blessing that I find myself in a career helping others. I started out providing in-home counseling visits to children and their families in crisis. That unique experience helped plant the seeds for my decades of work in the hospital setting with clients in crisis - struggling from mental illness, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, suicidal thoughts and many other crises. This set up the foundation for my work with clients in my private practice today.
Social work and helping others isn’t just a job for me. It is a way of life. I do my best in my personal life to teach my kids and grandkids how to live healthy lives through my own lifestyle. Every morning, I go on a long nature walk - rain or shine. I connect with my family and friends on a regular basis, and I enjoy socializing, having fun, and spending quality time with those around me. It’s important that I challenge myself everyday, learn something new, read, and keep my brain and body healthy. Having experienced many crises, losses and hardships throughout my life, I know what it feels like to struggle and can relate to my clients. I’ve learned to appreciate how precious life is. And just like when I was a little girl seeing my abuelita and mom connect with family, friends, and neighbors, I find myself all these years later doing the same, thousands of miles from that little island - and virtually, too! With every person I meet in my life, I believe there is always a possibility for things to get better.
Talk to you soon,
